Leo Bogart
Biography

Leo Bogart's first book, The Age of Television, was one of those selected for the White House library set up by President John F. Kennedy. His newly published book, Finding Out: Personal Adventures in Social Research, describes AAPOR's early days, the debate over standards, and the dilemma confronting the profession today as both its importance and its problems increase.

He has been president of the American and World Associations for Public Opinion Research, the Society for Consumer Psychology, the Market Research council and the Radio and Television Research Council. He received the AAPOR award in 1977; he and George Gallup were the first persons elected to the Market Research Council Hall of Fame.

He was for many years the executive vice president and general manager of the Newspaper Advertising Bureau, the marketing arm of the daily newspaper business. Finding Out also reviews earlier experience in public opinion research for the Standard Oil Company (New Jersey [now ExxonMobil], marketing research for Revlon, Inc. and account research service for McCann-Erickson, Inc.

Bogart has been a senior fellow at the Center for Media Studies at Columbia and a Fulbright research fellow. He holds a doctorate from the University of Chicago, has taught at Columbia and N.Y.U., and is a fellow of the American Psychological Association.

Among his other books are: Polls and the Awareness of Public Opinion, Commercial Culture, Press and Public, Cool Words, Cold War, Preserving the Press, Strategy in Advertising, and Project Clear (which describes research he directed that accompanied the desegregation of U.S. Army).
