2003 NYAAPOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WINNER:

Michael Kagay

Speech

Michael Kagay is director of public opinion research at The New York Times. For thirteen years he headed the department that designs, conducts, and analyzes public opinion polls for the newspaper, as well as the paper's half of Times/CBS News polls.

Prior to joining The Times in 1987, he was vice-president and division head at Louis Harris and Associates in New York City. For five years at Harris he directed large-scale surveys on public policy and social issues for the firm's foundation clients, including projects on access to health care, problems facing the elderly, public school teachers, and disabled Americans.

Prior to that, he was a faculty member for ten years at Princeton University, where he taught the University's courses on public opinion and polling in the Department of Politics and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

He earned his Ph.D. in political science at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He was a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research.

Dr. Kagay has long been involved in AAPOR. During 1998-99, Kagay served as president of national AAPOR. He was a member of the committee that founded the New Jersey chapter of AAPOR, served as its initial vice-president and as the second president of the chapter.

He and his wife live in Princeton, N.J. They have one child, a son currently in medical school.
