NYAAPOR Fall POQ Discussion Club + Happy Hour
How Yelp Reviews Revealed Anti-Chinese Bias During the Pandemic
Kick off your fall with NYAAPOR’s POQ Discussion Club + Happy Hour!
We're excited to launch NYAAPOR’s 2024-2025 programming calendar with another engaging discussion on an impactful recent study from Public Opinion Quarterly (POQ).
Our featured POQ article this season is “Othering in Everyday Life: Anti-Chinese Bias in the COVID-19 Pandemic” by Eunji Kim and Cindy Kam (Public Opinion Quarterly, 2023, doi.org/10.1093/poq/nfad035). This study sheds light on how social upheavals, like the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, can ignite biases against “the other.” The authors use a novel dataset of Yelp restaurant reviews to uncover how anti-Chinese prejudice emerged in eight large metropolitan areas (including New York), demonstrating how behavioral measures can capture important and timely dimensions of public opinion.Come join us for this stimulating discussion on Wednesday evening, followed by happy hour at the bar downstairs. This is a great opportunity to connect with fellow NYAAPOR members, expand your understanding of public opinion research, and kick off the new year with meaningful conversation and networking. Please register in advance, as space is limited. Note that this is a cash bar event. We look forward to seeing you there!
