How Social Media Creators Shape Mass Politics, presented by Eunji Kim, Columbia University
Join us for a POQ Discussion Club and happy hour featuring Eunji Kim of Columbia University, who will present her paper, “How Social Media Creators Shape Mass Politics.”
Political apathy and skepticism of traditional authorities are increasingly common, while social media creators are capturing more of the public’s attention. Eunji’s research explores whether these creators—often seen as informal or entertainment-focused voices—can shape political attitudes, policy views, political knowledge, and voting behavior.
Her pre-registered field experiment encouraged Americans aged 18–45 to follow progressive-minded social media creators on Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube during the 2024 election season. The study finds that social media creators can meaningfully influence political knowledge, policy positions, partisan evaluations, and vote choice, with effects that may exceed those of traditional campaign outreach and partisan media.
Come for the discussion, stay for drinks and conversation.
